The Intern Experience
Wishing all my fellow summer interns happy #NationalInternDay!
I have learned so much this summer at Digitas North America and in my previous internship opportunities. As this is my last year celebrating as a student (for now), I've been reflecting on the biggest lessons from my experiences:
- Ask all the questions you need. As interns, we can get so wrapped up in trying to be indispensable during our time. Also, as an intern who identifies as a minority, there can be a certain pressure we feel to perform in order to prove our spot or combat imposter syndrome. It's okay not to know everything or get confused. We are supposed to be learning!
- Communicate your bandwidth and set boundaries. Again with the indispensable mindset, you want to say yes to everything and anything, but juggling it all is neither feasible nor productive. Only you know what's on your plate so go ahead and ask for a deadline extension or for assistance. Your supervisors will trust and respect you more.
- Make goals for you internship and keep track of all the projects you are doing. It will make it easier for you to reference later and you can have examples for a skillset.
